FMP - Week 7

Another sombre week of retopologizing and unwrapping.

Although, my progress was halted a little bit because we were asked to present our progress this week to tutors. This was where I envisioned I would be by this point in the project so I relayed that to my tutors and showed the progress I’d made on my High Priestess and that was all fine. However, to fully meet the criteria of the brief I would need to implement a PBR prop into my set of characters. I have to plan ahead some allotted time to make said prop now, design it and all, but I think I’ll make something like an alter and I’ll composite my characters around it for my final render. I’m not terribly concerned that I need to add this extra prop, it’s more so just making sure that it fits with my characters and doesn’t look so out of place when posing them with it. I’ll need to iterate some ideas before executing it though and hopefully the actually making process won’t eat up too much time.

Anyway, retopologizing was straightforward as I only really needed it on the body, veil and skirt. I did it in 3DCoat again, being conscious of topology around joints in particular since his legs would be bending in a specific way and I’d need to compensate for the future rig he’ll have. With unwrapping I managed to condense it all down onto one 2048 x 2048 which works fine since Justice doesn’t have as many small parts on him as the Priestess did (I did however add some which weren’t on the originally design).

I also got some feedback this week in reference to Justice’s weapons. The scale was fine but the sword was thought to not necessarily be practical. The big gold wings additions on the side would make it very difficult to swing and carry if Justice is to be somewhat nimble and use the sword frequently. I hadn’t started making the sword and scale yet so this feedback came in at a good time so I could rework the design a bit before starting. Most likely I’ll just remove the big gold parts on the side and maybe make the handle longer, adding the gold that that part instead.

All of this did take up my week but I’ll be able to comfortably start texturing next week. In terms of texturing though I’ve been thinking of how to add the pop of red to Justice like I did with the Priestess. I’ll see to it more when actually texturing but most likely I’ll change his bandages to a red ribbon material so that the 2 models match. I’ll also need to think a bit on how to add something like that in future for the third model, Judgement.
